BASF bringing “Nemasphere” SCN trait to market

A crop protection company has developed what it’s calling the most groundbreaking innovation in soybean cyst nematode management in more than 60 years.

BASF trait development manager Mike McCarville says Nemasphere is a novel solution that will help the more than 200,000 soy growers affected by SCN.

“We’ve created a transgenic trait to provide a new mode of action and a new type of resistance to the market, so we can bring new resistant varieties for the farmer so (they) can get back to managing soybean cyst nematode the way they want to.”

He tells Brownfield nematodes, which are the leading cause of soybean yield loss in the U.S., are becoming more resistant to traits currently on the market.

Pending regulatory approval, BASF is looking to have Nemasphere available for farmers to plant in the 2028 growing season.

“We have an entire breeding program that’s about ‘we have a great trait, but we need the germplasm there that’s a vehicle to get it to the field. So we’ve been making a lot of crosses for the past few years, really working with that germplasm to make sure we have high yield potential in those varieties.”

McCarville says Nemasphere will be packaged with a full range of top-performing soybean varieties and stacked with the Enlist E3 herbicide tolerant trait.
