CattleFax CEO says any expansion to the cattle herd is extremely regionalized

CattleFax CEO Randy Blach says the US cattle herd will continue to shrink before it begins to see widespread growth.

He says there have been some indications of expansion, but it is extremely regionalized.  “In the Northern Plains, and some of the Western states where we’ve had a much, much more favorable rainfall situations since the late spring and through the summer,” he says. “But we’re certainly not seeing that play out in the central and southern plains regions.”

He tells Brownfield if weather conditions are favorable, widespread expansion could pick up.  “You’ll see fewer heifers in the placement mix by early next year,” he says.

Beef cow slaughter was down 13.3% in the USDA’s latest Livestock Slaughter report, but hasn’t slowed enough to reflect any significant investment in expansions.
