High-path avian flu detected in South Carolina turkey flock
Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in a
commercial turkey flock in the southwest part of South Carolina.
USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
says the H7N3 strain was confirmed by the National Veterinary Services
Laboratories in Ames, Iowa. Samples from the farm in Chesterfield County were initially tested at
the Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center.
According to APHIS, the virus mutated from a low pathogenic
strain that was recently found in the area.
State officials have quarantined the premises, and the birds
on the property have been depopulated.
It’s the first confirmed case of high path avian flu in a U.S. commercial poultry flock since 2017.
