Mnuchin: Deal on steel and aluminum tariffs is ‘close’

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the U.S. is close to negotiating a solution to the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico.

Mnuchin testified at a Senate subcommittee hearing Wednesday.

“I think we are close to an understanding with Mexico and Canada,” Mnuchin said. “I’ve spoken to the finance ministers. Ambassador Lighthizer is leading the effort on this, but I can assure you it is a priority of ours.”

Eliminating the tariffs would clear a major hurdle in the effort to pass the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Ag groups have been lobbying for the tariffs to be lifted so the USMCA approval process can proceed.
