Senators call for JBS investigation

Two Senate Foreign Relations
Committee senior members are calling on the Trump administration to investigate
JBS business transactions.

Senior members Marco Rubio of Florida and Bob Menendez of New Jersey have written to Treasury Secretary Mnuchin saying the Brazilian company’s bribery scandal and its ties to Venezuela’s regime need investigating. They say JBS also has a concerning reliance developing on Chinese financing and all those things could have implications for U.S. food security and overall national security.

The senators say the dominance
in the U.S. of beef and pork processing through JBS acquisitions over the last
12 years makes it a major player in the U.S. food sector and “the growing trend
of foreign investment” in the U.S. food system “demands attention and scrutiny.”
