Trump says India trade deal possible later this year
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi says India and U.S. have
agreed to negotiate on a bigger trade deal.
President Trump told reporters in India that finalizing a
trade deal will take some time. He says,
“A lot of very good deals are being made, and they’ll be kicking in toward the
end of the year. I would say if the deal
happens with India, it will be toward the end of the year, and if it doesn’t
happen, we’ll do something else that will be very satisfactory. It will be very good.”
Agricultural product and energy sales were part of the
discussions this week, including renewable energy, but much of the President’s
visit centered on security. The two
sides also signed a three-billion-dollar defense deal and discussed security concerns
over 5G technology manufactured by Huawei in China.
Trump emphasized the need for reciprocal trade agreements,
saying the U.S. has a 24-billion-dollar trade deficit with India. Trump stripped India of its preferential
export status last year.
