Vilsack: science-based trade relationships matter
As the United States and Mexico consult on the biotech provisions required in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says it’s important the trade relationship remains science-based.
“Whether its corn, soybeans or cotton. If you’re creating a concern about the safety or the effectiveness of a particular technology based on culture, that’s an issue. It undermines the whole trading process.”
Vilsack says he is hopeful both countries can get to a better place.
“If not, we’ll just continue the process. That’s why the USMCA was an improvement over the North American Free Trade Agreement, because it improves this process.”
Vilsack says Mexico is an important market for U.S. corn growers and U.S. corn is also important to Mexico’s livestock industry. The Ag Secretary spoke at the National Farmers Union Convention this week.
