Grassley to EPA: Increase RVO levels

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley has asked the U.S. EPA to increase renewable volume obligations (RVOs) for biomass-based diesel and advanced biofuels.

“Higher RVO levels allow the biofuel industry to meet the really fast growing demand for homegrown renewable fuels.”

During a press call Tuesday, the Iowa Republican said the agency’s recent RVO levels failed to align with market conditions. “The EPA’s inaction has since hamstrung the biofuel industry. Biodiesel plants have closed and investments have cooled.”

Grassley says he’s concerned about some biodiesel plant closures that recently occurred in Iowa and Wisconsin. “The reason for the closures was pretty simple. EPA hasn’t authorized high enough renewable volume obligations.”

In March, Chevron Renewable Energy Group cited poor conditions resulting from weak volumes under the Renewable Fuel Standard for shuttering plants in Ralston, Iowa and Madison, Wisconsin.
