Senate confirms Tom Vilsack as US Ag Secretary

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Tom Vilsack as the new U.S. Ag Secretary in a strong bipartisan vote of 92 to seven.

Ahead of the vote, Senate Ag Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, said Vilsack is sorely needed to lead the USDA.

“American farmers, families, rural communities need strong, effective leadership now more than ever.”

Ranking member John Boozman of Arkansas says Vilsack has an excellent reputation of putting rural America at the top of his agenda.

“I’m a strong believer that past performance is indicative of future performance so I’m confident that Secretary Vilsack will be successful this go around.”

Earlier, Vilsack’s nomination was approved unanimously by the Senate Ag Committee.
